Join us in finding solutions for childhood cancer and obesity

(Dr. Clayton Lawrence, founder and CEO, shares his thoughts in a weekly column focused on community wellness and inspiring others.)

Youth. Our mission at LEAP Foundation DC makes these young, growing leaders a priority by providing educational and training opportunities to meet the aspirations of the underserved citizens of the District of Columbia. Since 2009, we have been building on that mission, expanding into other service areas around the world. This includes collaborating with other nonprofits that serve similar missions and, therefore, amplifying our efforts. We are incredibly grateful for the leaders of these organizations, the staff and volunteers that offer support, and the donations that allow the work to be put to good use.

September highlights two important childhood diseases: cancer and obesity. While education is certainly a large component of LEAP’s efforts, we are proud to support causes that work toward eliminating the devastating effects of these diseases and offer solutions toward making tomorrow better for future generations.

Through our dedication to marathon sports, we have raised funds for local, national and global charities that recognize the importance of presenting opportunities for youth and adults to achieve overall health and wellness. Some of the causes we proudly rally behind include:

Students Run LA

Students Run LA challenges at-risk secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: the training for and completion of the Los Angeles Marathon.

Kids Run Miami

Kids Run Miami introduces youth to running to improve their health, fitness and wellbeing in Miami, Florida. It works by helping young people establish a consistent running program as part of their physical education daily lesson plans.

American Institute for Cancer Research

The American Institute for Cancer Research, which is associated with the World Cancer Research Fund, provides funding for research that focuses on the links between diet, physical activity and weight management to cancer prevention and survivorship.

Providing support to the American Institute for Cancer Research enables LEAP Foundation DC to expand on its mission to meet the unmet social and health needs of the people not only of the District of Columbia, but in communities across the country. In an effort to play our part in the prevention of diseases like cancer, LEAP continues to encourage our young people and their families to make healthy lifestyle choices through exercise, diet and positive choices.

Team for Kids

Team for Kids is another youth program fighting childhood obesity by encouraging youth to be physically active through running in New York State.
